Championship Updates !!!
Senior: R1: Athy 0-14 vs Ellistown 2-8, R2: Athy 0-10 vs Sarsfields 0-16, R3: Athy vs Round Towers
A victory in Round 14 in the league vs Naas sets up a final round encounter vs Moorefield hopefully ending the campaign on a high with championship preparation ongoing within the camp under the supervision of the management. The next round will be welcomed and hopefully lead to a result reflecting the effort and skill level of the panel.
Their day has come to play the third round, and will be challenged by Round Towers. Although we have been twice successful against the Black and Amber, nothing can be taken for granted in Championship football.
Senior B: R1: Athy vs Leixlip
Junior C: R1: Athy 2-12 vs Ellistown 1-7
Minor: R1: Athy 3-12 vs Sarsfields 0-13, R2: Athy 1-14 vs Leixlip 0-07 R3: Athy 1-18 vs St. Laurences 1-03,
After a very impressive League Campaign, reaching the final still to be played, the panel maintain what has been consistant, effective and efficient minor football in the club. The first round brought victory over rivals Sarsfields and no doubt has provided a base to build from. To add to this a victory over Leixlip makes it 2 from 2 for the lads, with a second consecutive match without conceeding a goal.
U-16: R1: Athy 5-15 vs Leixlip 0-01, R2: Clane 2-5 vs Athy 2-11, R3 Athy 1-16 vs Naas 0-5, Quarter Final: Victory over Round Towers, Semi-Final: Athy 0-15 vs Celbridge 1-10, Final: Athy 1-15 vs Kilcock 3-14
The lads, topping their group, are now into a draw with a chance to go straight into a semi-final or a quarter-final. In the group stages a total of 8-42 was scored with only 2-11 conceeded in 3 games. No doubt the management are happy with the panels performance reinforcing their status as a force at the highest level of U-16 club football in Kildare. When Celbridge, last year's winner's and the U-15 Winter League Champions, a challenge was no doubt on the horizon. Due to a magnificent performance from many players, a victory was worked out to progress to a St. Conleth's Park date with Kilcock.
On the day of the Final, everything went to plan in warm up and preparation. On the field of play the situation degraded slightly as they were beaten by Kilcock. However this could not be blamed on any one man, not because of a complete team blame, but because there was no blame what so ever. Each player worked their legs to stumps with a never say die attitude so typical of this group of young men in red. Sadly it did not come off on the day but one conclusion that is certain is that no stone was left un-turned, no man left anything on the field and the effort could not be matched. Each player should be proud of himself and what he has done under some fine coaching an management to get as far as the team did in 2010. No doubt these boys will be back with a sting in their tail and success is just one step away. Well Done lads, the whole club was very proud and can't wait to see you take to the field once again.

Summary of Rule Changes in Effect from May 15th
The GAA Congress 2010 passed a number of playing rule changes relevant to football and hurling which will come into effect in all games played on or after May 15th 2010. In total there are six changes specific to football only and three specific to hurling, while a further six changes affect both codes, A summary of the changes is as follows:
Football Only:
1. Handpass – If a player handpasses the ball using the open hand, there must be a definite underhand striking action.
2. Penalty Kicks – All penalty kicks will now be taken from 11 metres out
3. Kick Outs – All kick outs will now be from the 13 metre line
4. Sideline kicks – Line balls must be kicked from outside the boundary line
5. Illegal Charge - It is illegal for a charge to be made on a player kicking the ball.
6. Definition of bounce - The redefinition of the bounce has the effect that the “Basketball Type”, bounce, per se, is not a foul.
Hurling only:
1. Puck Outs - The penalty for taking a puck-out from outside the small rectangle is changed from the award of a 65m free to the opposition to a throw in the ball on the defenders’ 20m line.
2. Handpass - The ball must be released and struck with a definite striking action of the hand
3. Penalties - Both attackers and defenders must remain outside the 20m line and the arc until the ball is struck from a penalty and the three defenders on the line must not move off the line until the ball is struck.
Both Hurling and Football:
1. Restarting Play – If play is stopped by the referee to enable a seriously injured player to be treated, play will now resume with a free to the team that had possession. However it will not be permitted to score from such a free (if neither team is “in possession”, play shall re-start with a throw in)
2. Throw ins – when the play is being restarted by a throw-in, this must take place a minimum of 13 metres from the sideline
3. Advantage – A referee will now signal that advantage is being played by raising his arm
4. Extra Time – Extra time consists of 10 minutes per half only. The provision for two additional periods of 5 minutes per half has been removed
5. Boundary Lines – The penalty for a player deliberately going outside the boundary lines of the pitch to gain an advantage has changed from a caution to a free.
6. Charge – A charge is now defined as “shoulder to shoulder” rather than “side to side”
U-14's just short of winning line in Goal filled Feile A Final
Hard luck to the U-14 Boys who were just short of beating Newbridge rivals Sarsfields in last Sunday's Feile A Final held in St. Conleth's Park Newbridge. At the final whistle the Sash took victory 5-11 to 5-6. Despite Athy's best efforts to pinch the win Sarsfields held out to take their place as Feile A Champions 2010. The whole club would like to congratulate Sarsfields but also to commend our own U-14 stars who played well all season under their managers. They did nothing but improve through the Feile and along this road dispatched of Naas very convincingly in Geraldine Park. For many of the members of the panel next year will bring another shot at the title and a chance to represent Kildare in the Feile na nÓg 2011. Comhghairdeas do na lads on the standard of football they produced and ádh mór in preparations for the League later in the year.
